Over the last decade, kelp farming has garnered attention in North America as a climate-friendly alternative livelihood for fishing communities under stress. Alaska, with its industry-friendly regulations, skilled marine workforce, and ample coastline is ripe with opportunity. However, despite hefty federal investment, the industry has been slow to take off. In this talk, Homer-local kelp farmer Lindsay Olsen will discuss what kelp farming entails, the state of the industry in Alaska, and the opportunity it presents for Kachemak Bay.
